In principle, you would ideally want to reduce one's metabolic rate in order to prolong one's lifespan. Reducing the metabolic rate of a cell would result in the reduction in one's cellular division rate. Because a cell can only divide a limited number of times before it goes G_0, increasing the time it takes to reach that limited number, would proportionally increase the relative lifespan of said individual.
Breathing less would have to be a product of a lower metabolic rate in order for this to work. Not the other way around
