Is bread wheat the most efficient grain? I'm being a bit imprecise with that choice of words but which grain requires the least effort to grow the grain, harvest it and extract the grain and turn it into an edible product? With as minimal waste of the plant material as possible of course.

Depends on the climate and available space. Wheat grows best in temperate climates and requires a lot of space, and by extension a lot of water to grow.
It would be best for you to narrow down your question by specifying which climate zones you are considering.

Fair point. Let's try two approaches.
1. Assume each grain is grown in optimum climates for the grain.
2. Ignore rice and other tropical crops and look at regions that are capable of supporting many different grains such as China's North East.

The first one is probably closer to what I want to get at and I'm mostly interested in how much waste comes out of the entire process.

That's the thing though, I'm not sure how much of the production of these grains is because the grain is inherently efficient or if it's simply that we've developed enough technology to over come these efficiencies enough to make production profitable. Or if the grains are just produced the most cause people really like them, hence making them profitable.

That seems like the most calories in comparison to size of the plant, but I mean more the amount of food on the plate, merely the weight of the final food product.

Don't care whether it's a grain or not, potato.
Potatoes require basically no effort to plant or harvest, they don't really require any nutrients nor a high amount of water either.
They can grow basically everywhere aswell as long as they get some sunlight.
Potatoes are the chaddiest motherfuckers you'll find on your plate, and you cannot deny it.
