Even if you don't get tenure or even complete your PhD just stick around and actually contribute, it's not about money/prestige/renown but advancing knowledge regardless of your situation as Hawking said.

the worst part is feeling so rushed. everyone's looking for a paper that will make their career. everyone's racing to be the first to publish something that sets a record, which will be supplanted in a week or two by another equally useless model. creating something that is both novel and useful is incidental and rare to the typical work that a compsci phd student performs. it's so cheap. the work feels cheap. even now, when i'm working on something that i feel is actually publishable, it feels somewhat cheap. somewhat obvious.

and who knows? maybe it'll get scooped before i can even get it out there. that's what makes it so cheap. it doesn't take any great insight to think of these things. when the state of the art reaches a certain point, certain things become obvious to anyone with two brain cells to rub together, and then everyone rushes to publish. you'll see nearly identical papers at the same conference.

Yup. Give up on the idea that you will create something new and original that greatly advances CS.

Write a ton of papers, each with what looks like a completely obvious advance from the one before. It is better to have 14 papers each with one new idea, than one paper with 14 new ideas. Also you will need to network and start writing "communal" papers, you will be author 3 of 16.

it's kind of neat, and i feel that it's worth publishing. it's something i think would be worth others time to read.

but honestly i'd rather just chew away at some esoteric problem for a few years and not have to worry about piranhas biting my ass the whole time or beating me to the punch.

because i'm not writing for a reviewer. i'm writing for other researchers. if it's not worth their time to read, it's certainly not something i'd want to publish.

to the chinese, virtue is doing what others do. following a prescribed example is how they think they should behave. this is the behavior they reward and the behavior they expect to be rewarded for. i don't mean this in the sense that they're "collectivist" or always follow the rules. they simply imitate one another to a greater degree than most other people.
