I noticed everyone on here is into high-level languages like FORTRAN and something called "Rust", which is supposedly popular with people who are half man and half woman. Why would you need anything other than machine code.

Becasue you frequently need to modify code and the machine code format means manually editing tons of dependencies by hand that otherwise, you know, could be automated away. Try writing a large scale program on a modern computer that takes advantage of the feature modern processes have properly anywhere near as quickly as using an optimizing compiler.
