on the cellular level, how intricate do you think physiology is

i know shit gets complex hardcore on the molecular level, but in your opinion how complex do you think physiology is? doesn't seem too crazy, but i wonder how many checkpoints and pitstops and repackaging a secreted protein takes from destination to its target (say a brain hormone acting on the heart). mechanisms and shit can't be that complex to get a potent signal that far, in my opinion.
