Do I absolutely need to learn Deep Learning if I want to get hired as a Data Scientist?
I was always interested in stats and probability, I hate having to make the time to learn the neural network meme.

it's not a meme and p easy to get the basics of. start with SVMs or decision trees with loss functions just to get the basics of classification. Then look at the perceptron and then backprop. And you'll have all the tools you need to get NNs.

It's not that hard to grasp the basics of it, especially if you already know some basics of machine learning, which you should anyway. I doubt you will really need much deep learning in most data science roles though.

I already know SVMs and boosted trees really well, I'm actually writing a blogpost about LightGBM because all the explanations online are kind of shitty.
The LightGBM paper isn't wonderful about explaining things either (just assumes you know everything about XGBoost basically)

I don't know shit about statistics, but I got hired as a data scientist because I'm really good at optimization. Last week I dipped my toes into deep learning at work. This week my models are exceeding the state of the art. Stats plebs btfo: applied mathematicians win again.
