How do people read textbooks? They're dull and meaningless as fuck. They seem more like reference books to me. Can I just skip to the problems?

Textbooks are reference books and are only supposed to provide shallow summary of various concepts. Actual scientific books tend to contain the actual reasoning and background for the formulation of a particular concept.

A textbook is a collection of small pieces of information regarding a particular subject, usually structured in a pedagogical way and intended to be used as the jumping off point for a lecturer. A scientific text is one elaborating and formulating on a particular scientific concept.

Compare for example Pauling's Nature of the Chemical Bond to his General Chemistry.

So does a high amount of detail or specificity make a book a scientific book and a low amount a textbook? A textbook covers a branch of study. Chemical bonds is a branch of study just as the whole of chemistry is. So I don't understand what you mean.

Yes I guess that's one way of putting it. I don't really have a solid definition other than a textbook being mostly a reference work created to supplement lectures.

I don't. Gave up reading t-books long before and seriously I agree w/ you that they are dull. I watch videos and then use them as supplements.
