Why are explosives, specifically in warheads, arranged in these shapes? What benefit does it serve and how does it work?

did you actually do any reading on nuclear weapons? Nuclear bombs work when uranium is compressed to the point where it splits, and continues splitting in an uncontrolled fission reaction which is the explosion. More compression means more explosion.
