Its seems to be overpopulation is named by the Chinese itself as their lack of empathy, which I do believe contributes. Anyone living in a city, can say its a common sentiment for people not to care because of the bystander effect.
The other part seems to be genetics at play from China's leadership choices their dynasties were built on the back of starving peasants and utter disdain for the starving peasants at the same time. That the that survivors were the ones who always followed what the authority told them no matter what, by China being able to afford such brutality towards insubordination from having a large number of people they could effectively make examples of the "good men or dissidents" of China.
Now I would be interested to see a comparison to Koreans since genetically Chinese contributed to their genetics quite a bit along Taiwan. North Korea and South Korea have both been exposed to being run by personality cults so their leadership principles have been identical to China's.
