As a computer science student that want to go straight to the industry after graduation, would studying physics by myself add anything worthwhile in my life? I find it interesting and I would like to dabble into it as a hobby after my life get more or less stabilized and I manage some deserved free time, but I would suck if it didn't add in nothing to my life/career

what do you mean 'dabble into it'. you could get a good understanding of physics learning it on the side but you will almost certainly contribute nothing to it if that's what you mean

You can definitely read physics textbooks and then papers on your own, yes. Not sure what your current level is, but modern physics requires a lot of math, and I don't mean calculus or linear algebra. Things like representation theory, algebraic topology, functional analysis, measure theory, and much more.

However, you absolutely won't be able to contribute. If it's fine by you then go ahead. It will probably take you at least several yesrs depending on the field.

Not to hijack the thread, but I'm a physics student looking to improve my programming.
I've got the basics, data structures, etc., but I am terrible at planning/designing a large project. Does anyone know of a way of improving other than writing spaghetti and trying to shape into something decent after the fact?
Looking for anything high-level design related, so textbooks or even just terminology for me to use to find my own resources.

Read Feynman’s Lectures on Physics and then try to work through a book on Classical Mechanics. If you enjoy this then you’ll find your way to the more difficult subjects soon enough. Seriously consider whether you care though because much of physics, the education, is tedious problem solving not basking in deep contemplation of fundamental forces.

I see, maybe I should focus on computer science, most knowledge in the field is fun and highly applicable.

You should see this as an opportunity to expand your knowledge while still being relevant to your major in CS. There are many computational problems that require some basic understanding of physics. Good examples are computational fluid dynamics and calculating path integrals in quantum field theory.

This is genuinely hard to learn. I know no better way of actually learning this than actually attempting to make large project, figuring out what is causing it to be a mess and then designing your next project taking that into account.

Knowledge of 'patterns' can help, but you're better off learning a highly expressing language like Common LISP and how to eliminate redundancy using the tools that gives you than you are using a bunch of design 'forumlas' and hoping things work out. Good software design is a hard problem.
