It would be easy asf to terraform mars to the point the atmosphere is not only higher than the Armstrong limit (the point where you need a pressure suit) but breathable too. all within a single year. Everyone has been looking at the how to melt the pole, but they were looking at the wrong place. Soil perchlorates, first thought as a challenge to colonies would in fact be the best way to give mars an atmosphere. Perchlorate levels in soil are about 0.6% of a given mass of soil, given the soil density of mars at around 2.7g/cm^3, thats 16.2 kgs of perchlorate per cubic meter of soil, and most of the mass of perchlorate is oxygen. Perchlorate is easily reduced by some bacteria on earth for food anaerobically, producing ;chloride ions which bind to nearby elements and become salts, and free molecular oxygen which would be outgassed to the atmosphere. Reducing every 10m of soil perchlorates would add 0.45% earth pressure to the mars's atmosphere, and soil composition is identical for AT LEAST the top 100m of soil on mars. Reducing the top 100 meters of soil on mars would result in an atmosphere pressure 4.5% that of earths, still below the 6 % Armstrong limit and not breathable, but in places like Hellas Planitia and the Valles Marineris, the pressure is double average martian pressure due to being so below sea level. In both locations pressure would be 9% of earths, which is greater than the 6% it would need to be to ditch the pressure suits AND its close to half the atmospheric oxygen as earths atmosphere, with some minor metabolic engineering like increasing fructose fermentation by up regulating glut5 with mRNA injections (like the naked mole rat), we should be able to colonise and explore sections of mars without physical protection. All we need to do is send a few rockets dropping some GMO perchlorate reducing bacteria onto Mars. Does Elon have too much Khosian admixture or whats the problem????
