Those gaps are smaller than the wavelengths of the photons used inside of microwave ovens so those waves can’t actually escape, but the gaps are smaller than the wavelengths of visible light so we can still see inside of them.

Of course, radio doesn’t work deep underground because the photons aren’t able to make it through all the molecules in the stone. When they do impact, they increase thermal energy, ie warming, but that’s about it.
