Asimov had far more technical and non fiction published then he did sci fo stories.
Frank Herbert based a lot of dune on ecology, and the inspiration for the whole thing was an article he wrote about a ruch community in northern california who used poverty grasses to anchor the dunes encroaching the subdivision.
