How much do private universities care about extracurriculars for transfer students? I'm probably going to transfer out of CC with a 3.7 and besides Umass Lowell and Amherst, I'm going to apply to BU, Northeastern, Tufts and Cornell. I'm don't make money so I should get the max aid I can get for being poor. So they might be cheaper than public uni. Should I even bother to apply to these private unis with zero extracurriculars cause I think my 3.7 is pretty good. Hate to waste 300 bucks for nothing.

If money is tight for you write a letter to the admissions office that briefly explains your situation. You might be able to get a waiver.

Extracurricular requirements only exist to get otherwise unqualified candadites from underrepresented demographics through the admissions process. If you're not from one of these demagraphics then you're gonna get shafted one way or another, especially if you're expecting the school to foot tuition.

I'd say your best bet is to just say you were too busy for extracurriculars because you were working a job to make ends meet. Subtly play up the poorfag angle.

Of those schools, Cornell may be a bit of a stretch with only a 3.7. Still might be worth a shot. Good luck

I have zero income. I just concentrated on school the whole time. Any way can I just make up a EC or two? How do they know I didn't volunteer at my local church? I plan to just get my letter of recommendation from one of my teachers I didn't know too well so he wouldn't know a damn thing about my ECs even if I had them.

Also, another question I have been wondering. I was an absolute shit student in high school graduated with a 2.1 GPA, 8 years later I've done a complete 180. Do schools like underdog stories or do they like transfer students who were consistent throughout their lives?

Come to UMass Lowell, we have a BJJ club and a pretty well known engineering program, especially plastics, printable circuits, and defense stuff. A surprising number of our faculty come from MIT- hell our most recent EE prof did his postdoc there.

In all seriousness, pretty much every other college you mentioned is better. (except Amherst's engineering. I'd put it below ours.) Our plastics engineers are serious ballers, however- a good chunk of the companies at the career fair come just for them. (Biotech companies coming from the west coast, etc.) And since it;s the most selective, if you do apply to UML I would say to put plastics as your major if you're even remotely interested.

While I wouldn't recommend making stuff up, you should know that applications are very rarely checked for accuracy. Highschool doesn't matter to colleges if you're transferring in as a junior, but feel free to put in a few sentences about how you've matured just in case.

Honestly I'm at a shitty out of state community college with a 3.8 gpa and I'm getting emails from Cornell baiting me to apply. I looked it up and apparently they're really transfer friendly there, so you might have a decent shot. Still, the net cost for going there is like 30k including financial aid, so I'm probably not gonna apply
