They say it's possible through neuroplasticity for one part of the brain to take up another's function if the need should arise. I have an idea that if I "blind" myself (either literally or through sensory deprivation) I can free up the visual cortex for logical/mathematical problem solving and proofs. Likewise, by removing other senses or body parts, their power could also be turned toward mathematics. The question is, how much is too much? Without sight, I can still do math, but reading and writing it will be tricky. Without hearing, I can do those, but attending lectures will be difficult. Without hands I will have trouble writing down my results.

It's a bit like RPG character creation: how many "disadvantages" will you take on for a few extra skill points? By the way, has anyone tried this before?
