The Leaven character knows all the primes under 1000 cold, but she claims not to be able to do the prime powers under 1000, calling the problem "astronomical". She is under extreme stress, in a hot series of rooms with deadly traps and a group of people at each other's throats, and hasn't had any water or food for a day or two.
Had Leaven been rested, she would have quickly realized that the upper 1000 bound for the problem renders it fairly simple, especially for a person who knows the primes themselves in that range, cold.
