>>11040962>Can you give me some examples of real world applications of PDEs?This is a very interesting application of PDEs that a Russian professor taught us: when you solve PDE in a sphere you get Bessel functions with integer index, but in a hemisphere you get also the ones with half integer index. The first zero of the (regular) Bessel function 1/2 is larger than the first zero of the (regular) Bessel function 1. Why is this important? Because this means that there exists a range of radii such that a hemisphere of plutonium is subcritical but a sphere of plutonium is critical, allowing you to construct nuclear weapons.
