Let's say I have a 12 sided dice, and I want to take the (mod 3)+1 of the result to simulate a 1 in 3 roll. This should provide an equal chance, assuming fair dice, of rolling a 1 in 3 chance, right?

What happens if the dice does not have a factor of 3? Like a d20, how would that skew the results?
