In order to address questions such as "What is the squareroot of -1?"

and "What is the squareroot of i?"
>$\sqrt{i}= 1/\sqrt{2} + i/\sqrt{2}$
the meaning of a squareroot apparently ends up being "half of a rotation."

In that case, is it not more appropriate to say "The square root of 1 is -1?" since -1 is half a rotation away from 1?
