The reason most illusions like this work is because of how our brain and eyes are set up to interpret motion. The same things that make you feel weird when looking at these static images insure that you can catch something thrown to you.

What's the illusion? It's just a repeating pattern forming an eye.

Isn't an illusion a pattern which makes the eye see things which aren't there?
