I need to guess how many smarties are in this jar before 8:00pm(PST) so i can win a contest at my local despensary. plz help me out with math n shit. I know we'll need to figure out the packing efficiency of the candy and stuff but idk how to find that.

1 smarties package = 2.4 in = diameter of jar roughly
pi1.2^2 = 4.52 in.
height of jar based on smarties package = 3.4in
3.4(4.52) = 15.38 = rough volume of jar.

Smartie dimensions: .39in diameter .16in height. volume = .019in.

15.38/.019 = ~809 smarties (WITH NO AIR)
However, cylinder packing efficiency is about .9, so about 10% of the jar is air, 90% smarties.
809 x .9 = 728

Since they're randomly thrown in & not packed as efficiently as possible the number is closer to something like 500-600. There's more in there than it looks like.

This isn't a bad method. It uses the picture as a slice that represents the center and then spin it out to estimate the total number.

Given that 91% is the best theoretical ceiling for sphere packing, I'm gonna go ahead and assume that less volume/surfacearea ratio solids thrown randomly and not as efficiently packed as possible are gonna account for more than 1%.
