Unironically OP, its your best bet. Realistically, though, unless you have a lab at your job where they let you moonlight, the Prof won't be interested unless you become a full time slave for him as a grad student. Maybe some up and coming new Prof who has no students might be desperate enough to bring you on.

You might get lucky. Are you offering to help for free? I know a professor who has trouble getting students to complete the projects they work on, and if you have expertise in the field he might take you up on the offer. I bet you could find a professor like that in your area if you have knowledge of mechatronics.
