They are necessary for string theory to properly work. So far we have discarded the hypothesis that gravity was that weak because it kept leaking into other dimensions. We tested it by observing the gravitational waves on two colliding black holes. No evidence was found that the gravity was leaking out into anything.

My guess is that advanced life, after developing real AI and a way to extract biological conciousness, has transferred itself into the higher dimensions and now struggles to keep the 3D-apes like us in check.

Also there could be life that originated in the higher dimensions and is equally unable to communicate with us as we are to communicate with them.
