Our theories of physics break down at 10^-32 seconds when the entire currently observable universe would be about the size of a grain of sand. We have recreated the conditions at this time. Earlier than 10^-32 we can neither produce nor our theories can predict the nature of the universe.
At 10^-32 the universe was too hot for the fundamental forces of nature to exist as we know them. At a temperature of 10^15 (a quadrillion kelvin) the Higgs field no longer gives inherent mass to particles such as quarks and the electron. When you take that mass away from the particles that carry the weak nuclear force, they behave just like the photon which itself carries the electromagnetic force. The Weak and the Electromagnetic Force sort off merge into an unified Electroweak force. Or theories work really well at that point and we have replicated the conditions in particle accelerator.
The next step ought to be to get to a 10^29 Kelvin, at an age of around 10^38 seconds. It is expected that the Electroweak and the Strong Nuclear Force merge into one force. We need a Grand Unified Theory to actually describe that. We need to produce energies 1,000,000,000,000 times greater than possible with our biggest particle accelerators.
Go back even further, 10^-42 seconds, and the universe is 10^^20th of the with of a proton. That would be the Planck length. Here psychics are complete broken. General gravity enters into conflict with Quantum Mechanics. We need a theory of Quantum Gravity to go further. Note that we don't actually know if the universe was ever this small. We have rewind the entire history of the universe by using basic general relativity. Is that valid that far back?
