Light isn't the speed limit just because. The "speed of light" should instead be called the "speed limit of cause and effect" so that people won't think it makes sense to outrun it.

If you had something traveling faster than c you would see a bright flash at its nearest point to you. From that flash you would see the photons of the ship zooming away, at the same time all the light catching up would look like an identical copy zooming off in the opposite universe.
