>>11012730There is a common misconception that we're merely experiencing a fraction from the "potential" consciousness and that more evolved organisms than us magically see more things as if having 300 IQ makes you notice the secrets of the universe.
Not at all, we're at peak consciousness right now - the moment you pass the feedback loop that allows for a conscious thought is the moment you stop growing there. What we do lack however, is the ability to control it. In fact as someone who has been deeply interested into specifically the concept of willpower and has done hundreds of different experiments around it, from the direct ones you tend to read online to very elaborate sequences of actions like manipulating my subconsciousness trough lucid dreams, I can ensure you that no matter what you do you will NOT gain control of your primal drives and the thing controlling your consciousness will always remain survival first, reproduction second, or a very abstract sequence of events which ultimately has either of those at its end but has you deluded that it doesn't.
However, very rarely, you will cause some kind of an unintentional overflow which will allow you to generate a drive to do something that is beyond either of those two genetic drives. I still don't understand how exactly does this happen, but what will happen in that moment and for a while after, is that you'll get flooded with infinite willpower and will be able to do literally anything you please, having full command of your consciousness and the ability to override most instinctual programming, even the desire to survive. If I had to make a guess, I'd say that this is exactly what happened to him. My current hypothesis is that this has something to do with depression and is like the last resort of your body trying to give you the reins to unfuck yourself from your situation, which is why so many people consciously override self-preservation and kill themselves during a depressive episode.
