There is a reason quality headlamps come with a feature that just produces red light. It's for night vision and doing tasks at night where you don't want to overstimulate someone's eyes.
The red light is less powerful and won't disrupt your night vision, it also isn't painful to look at. It is also useful when tracking animals at night since they won't really pay any attention to the red light.
My headlamp has a red, green, and blue light options. To be honest, I'm not sure of the purpose of the other two colours. What I do know, however, is that the blue is far more painful to look at than the red.
