The flame is what you see when you look at a fire, that's gasses near the combusting material that are subjected to the energy produced by a highly exothermic reaction. Atoms in the gasses respond to the thermal energy as electrons get excited, which causes electrons to jump up an energy level. Once they cool down enough, the electrons fall back down a level emitting photons. We see them as light. There's a lot more to the flame than that, though, but that's the basics of how we see it.
