A lot of the misinformation is founded on the idea that the research establishment (universities, institutions, scientists, publications, science media) cannot be trusted and is either fudging data or intentionally misinterpreting it. I think to address the problem we need to do more than counter misinformation, we need to restore faith that the establishment trustworthy. Not that it is perfect but its conclusions are correct within some tolerance on the order of +/-10% not +/-100%.
