Why do electric vehicles use lithium ion batteries instead of other older technologies like lead acid batteries? Size? Weight? Are lead acid batteries not powerful enough?

I assume the process of mining process of lead has a lesser effect on climate change, and also I've heard the anti-EV crowd claim there is a limited quantity of lithium that will quickly be used up when electric vehicles become mandatory in western countries.
