hey yo /sci/, I've got a couple burning questions on my mind that I went down several wikipedia rabbit holes to try to find the answer to, only to no avail. Maybe you could help me out and give me your opinions or knowledge on some of them?

So like, Neurons transmit electrical signals to each other, Neurons are wired in different ways and lead to different parts of the brain and body right? The center of the brain is mostly made up of these neural networks. But from what I understand, all that really happens is that certain signals pass back and forth? They don't really GO anywhere, they just seem to travel the wires. So...

These are individual cells doing nothing but transmitting signals to each other, how does this do anything rather than nothing at all? It seems so incredibly pointless if you didn't know any better.

Not an answer, just saying that this also confuses me. Like how do neurons which store memory translate into the fairly detailed "movies" I can play in my head of events I've experienced in the past? Like my first time painting Easter eggs or something, I can remember the smells, the sights, I can completely relive it (in approximation) and remember all the things I heard and did. Sometimes the memories are so entrancing that I lose track of what's going on in front of my actual eyes. It's hard to imagine that all of that is just a bunch of atoms floating around.

They aim to hit a certain area and active a network of neurons, although I guess you could say that the signals somewhat fire back to retrace the path and solidify it, but they don't just pass back and forth for no reason. You would probably spas out if it does like a seizure.

It's not really know except that neurons can contain a lot of information within them that they decided was worth dedicating space to. I recall an experiment in which they probed a person's brain in a certain spot that activated a neuron specifically tailored to remembering a famous person. This example is kind of strange if you really think about it because neurons generally hold onto many types of information and to have one neurons or even a network of neurons focused on only one thing would be extremely inefficient unless that person had that much of an importance towards that kind of information. It's also really difficult to test what's inside an neuron because it contains all the multiple kinds of variances in signals to activate it that to detail such a thing would require absolute precision we lack.

Pretty much, if I were to explain with an analogy. The neuron is radio that has different frequencies and can forever have those signals so long as it doesn't degenerate. The pathways may be lost though even if the neuron exists and as a result, memories would be "lost". Although whether or not something is ever really lost if it's just missing a path isn't an answered question.

Wouldn't you think that if eyes aren't what really see and it's actually the signals that are sent to the brain to draw up a visual image, that by that logic, it could always draw up a visual image given the necessary signal?

Same way that they squirt at each other to form your other senses. It’s all neurological. They become the actual mind when the network is sufficiently complicated enough to actually be known as a brain. That’s why the different parts of the brain can be labeled with different functions. They’re still all neurons, just slightly different. You are just a collection of these chemical reaction. You aren’t a big electrical charge though. Who knows what you are there.
