Hume explained that reality or at least perceived reality was sum a of momentum, a sum of the sensorial perceptions and the conscious evaluation of said perceptions in addition to our memory.

So the gestalt school wanted to explain with empirical experimentation how this phenomenon of perceived reality came to be.
