What actually happens when you spray bug repellent on a bug?

I understand the bug particles will begin to repel one another. But are the forces involved actually strong enough to send the bug flying apart? Can careful application cause the bug to spin, or propel it in a specified direction?

I ask because I am interested in renewable energy sources, and as insect biomass becomes cheaper (as a burgeoning food staple) I would like to find ways it can be used to solve the energy crisis and climate change.
