It makes no sense at all. That's not a minor oversight. There's a pretty fucking large collection of non-human life, both past and present. You can't just cut all that off from human life in any reasonable way to make this idea work. There isn't any one clear and unambiguous moment in history when all of a sudden the first 100% anatomically modern human was born to a couple of non-anatomically modern hominid parents.
And if you instead say the story works as long as you drop the humans only clause then that creates its own problem which is that you can't meaningfully draw a dividing line where the life you'd be reincarnating into would be mentally aware enough to support any sort of experience that could move you further along as part of this overall egg process. And you wouldn't have a way to meaningfully draw the line between unicellular vs. multicellular where you'd start living through the latter instead of each cell involved in some not yet fully multicellular life having cluster of cells e.g. even the currently existing example of algae would be debatable for whether you'd be algae collectively as a plant or whether you'd be a series of individual algal protists.
