It's one thing to understand how big those objects are likely to be on paper but the actual size comparison is ming boggling. Just the idea that there are possibly billions of several million Solar mass objects out there is crazy. People talk about our planet being small in comparison to the Sun, but our Sun is fucking tiny in comparison to other stellar phenomena. Earth is a cosmic microbe, and humans are so small and our lives so quick we can barely gave been said to have existed.
The other one is cosmic time. In the grand scheme of things, 14 billion years (the approximate age of the Universe) is fucking nothing. If you compare it to the possible length of the Universes possible life span, 14 billion years would be like a 100th of a second past midnight. Our Universe is incredibly young, and really we basically live in the aftermath of a massive release of energy and spacetime before the inevitable blackness and nothingness that will come to dominate the universe. We live on a microtesimal piece of rock orbiting a tiny piece of fusion capable plasma in the hot afterglow of the birth of the universe.
