Halfway through a PhD in engineering where post-doc is not necessary for tenure track. Is academia for betas who need to circlejerk over every minor success in their life to appear as though they've ascended to fly in the face of the chads who are making 100k out of undergrad? Or is industry for sell outs who need to get cucked by their VPs and CEO? Based opinions preferable, FWIW I really enjoy my dissertation research.

Industry is probably better money and less stress depends on where you choose to work at, Professors and people in academia are usually high stress and workload lots of grading to do.

I know because my dad is an engineer in industry and he has lots of free time at home unlike my mom a professor who is constantly grading papers.

Your lab’s research program will be entirely dependant on your creativity, analysis, flexibility, and ultimately devotion. You will be the one to find funding, students, and collaborators. You have to think one, five, and even ten years down the road to have a successful research program. You have to make contacts and be reliable. You have to teach and do other administrative work you may not want to do.
An industry position may have comparable salary, but you won’t be able to research, and will have less responsibility/freedom (depending on how you look at it).
If you can’t see this in your PhD you’re not going to make it.
