Because it's actually worth it to build big batteries. SMES is a meme, the energy density of SMES is pretty low. It's 40 k/kg when tesla batteries have an energy density of roughly 740 kj/kg. Sure power density is high, but the energy density ain't. Lithium ion might even be competitive with SMES now for improving power quality, that is providing a lot of power for a short amount of time. SMES in 2013 was something like $2000/kw and Tesla's powerwall 1 is $1500/kw, power wall 2's even cheaper especially for peak power.
