If you don't want the advanced students to take over every group session, don't pair them with people who have a weak grasp of the subject matter.
And why is it white men? Probably because they knew about the expectations of a university setting coming in, and were predisposed to the kind of behavior that lets a person thrive in academia (i.e. speaking over others when you have something important to add).
