Plain memorization is literally the first step. As you reflexively regurgitate memorized info to solve a problem you start to gain a deeper understand as you utilize the memorized data more and more, you gain a better understanding of the whole picture, and through active solving, gain an understanding of the memorized data.

Also, plain memorization is what you need. If you want intuitive understanding of something you'll first need to understand how the basic process works to be able to associate it with similar or correlated material intuitively.

It’s not the genetic memory. People like Feynman were studying mathematics from a very early age onwards. His dad gave him a calculus textbook. He seems genius because he has deep familiarity with the material; if you spent 25 years of your most neuroplastic lifespan on a subject area you’d seem like a genius too.
