people who take the time and have the skill to understand and master a science or craft don't take too kindly to it being dumbed down and diluted for the sake of appealing to those who are too thick or uninterested to understand it in the first place, then even worse if they are highly successful in getting these 'new' people into the field this often results in the standards, integrity and quality of the field dropping to accommodate the new stock

If by science communicator you mean a person that gets the layman exited about science and keeps the tax dollars flowing, then he's a very good science communicator. Unless you believe grant monnies are magical infinite pool of money that automatically refill after being empited, then he's overrated.
