The right hand rule is not good, among other reasons, because people usually have a pencil in their right hand when they are trying to think about which way the cross product vector goes. You kind of have to put your pencil down to do the right hand rule, but it is easy to imitate driving a screw or loosening a screw without setting your pencil down.
