It takes a lot of learning to understand evolution, the understanding of the concepts, the examination of evidence, all the back ground knowledge required. Genetics. Natural selection. Cell biology. Biochemistry. Geology. Physiology.
Its not something that can be grasped in a few hours. Especially not over a dinner table.
People who are argue are usually lacking in basic education, a lack of understanding of the most rudimentary scientific concepts, an generally have an ingrained prejudiced against being open minded and impartial in their world view.
My guess would be that even if you could eloquently argue the case and present the evidence he would not accept it. You will just hit a brick wall of ignorance. Like someone saying the Standard Model of particle physics is invalid because you cant see the the electromagnetic force and coming up with some loony alternative explanation. ( But usually they dont have an alternative explanation, other than "God", they just deny the scientific rational ).
