Honestly unless you have a shitton of experience and are talking to small companies (that you have done research on prior to going to the career fair - they expect you to know everything about their “values” before introducing yourself) you’re better off just applying online. In fact, most large companies will tell you to apply online no matter how well you talked to them in person.
Career fairs are really only useful if you’re wanting to work for local/semi local startups or small engineering firms. I know many people who work at google, microsoft, ibm, etc., and never once went to our school’s career fairs, which are apparently the largest in the Midwest.
But yeah, haircut, shave, tailored suit, resume holder, and knowledge of the companies you’re talking to will help.
