How do you "kill" a psychological addiction in terms of neurobiology? Do you just have to deprive a certain pathway of stimulation until the urges go away? Can addiction ever be fully removed?

Also are there certain techniques for quitting that are typically more effective? Is tapering (for a psychological addiction) viable? What about going in so deep that you come out the other side, like smoking 100 cigarettes in a row to make you hate smoking- associating feelings of disgust with the activity.
