Is taking stimulants to study worth it?

Due to a horrible upbringing I've never learned discipline or given a fuck about my GPA.
As I'm somewhat bright I managed to stay a above average of my class and do ok at competitions, as time went by it came to a point where I didn't study at all and barely paid attention during classes.
When the time to prepare for high school finals came I didn't have the drive to do it at all which resulted in me not doing well enough on them to get into a good uni.
I've finally learned to see discipline and hard work as extremely important and I want to start actually studying, take detailed notes and listen to the lecturer throughout my undergrad CS course.
The thing is, after so many years of slacking off I don't think I'll be able to bring myself to do it as I constantly procrastinate everything and get nothing done.
Will getting prescribed methylphenidate for daily use make me able to function like a well developed adult?
I mainly worry about developing tolerance and the potential drawbacks of having to take the medication for 3.5 years straight spent at the uni.
