I've studied in both the humanities and in mathematics and have typically avoided lectures because it was more efficient to study from the materials/ textbooks.

Shouldn't universities just cut down lectures almost entirely and have a method closer to Oxbridge with a mentor/tutor and weekly problems sets/ essays to set the baseline for work done? Or maybe even just do distance learning education and have practicals/labs when necessary?

How does /sci/ learn and improve?
