As someone who lived in the 1980s, I actually remember the announcement in the news. I only remember because we got to watch it in social studies class and got to goof off because of it. The teacvher was really tore up about it, but I don't remember his ramblings about why he was tore up about it, nor do I even are to this day. It was probably just some weird psyops thing or a mistake like when someone thought the queen of England died when they overheard a rehearsal.
