The effects of anything, whether positive or negative, is more pronounced and effective in children, teens and young adolscents. If you're not part of any of these groups, don't even bother trying to improve your IQ.

Obviously, if some high schooler or undergrad did N-back he would've improve his IQ. But you? Nah.

The main reason why N-back and maths improves IQ in people who're developing is because both improve working memory, which is an important subset of general intelligence (or "g").

Simple, you need to hold the numbers in your head. If I tell you to multiply 120 by 6, you will need to remember that 6 multiplied by 0 is 0, that 6 multiplied by 20 is 120, and that 6 multiplied by 100 is 600. You add them all together and it's 720.
