That is the key to understanding evolution, and the fallacy that successful traits are chosen instead of just being the ones left behind.
The problem with the pleb understanding of the story of evolution is that they don't understand that the mutation creates its benefit; it does not take advantage of a benefit that is already there.
And this is the key failure of eugenics. We cannot know what we don't know we can't know. So in forcing the death of what we choose to be abhorrent, we rob ourselves of the ability to even find what could be the best path to survival, and that includes the idea of what constitutes intelligence. By selecting for what we know, we insure we can never know what we don't know we don't know, but we can know that that assuredly will lead to our death.
