Seriously, they arent trying to teach biblical stories in school (though there are some that want that, it is a minority), they are trying to put forth creationism and intelligent design.
Whats funny about this debate is, the intelligent design theory is a more encompassing theory, and explains even more things then just the origin of humans. It explains also the origin of the laws of physics, universe etc. Thomas Nagel's book on Teleology and Intelligent Design has been ostracized by mainstream atheists because it sounds too close to what they think is le cloud man. The atheists are against it either because:
(1)It takes away their ability to impose intellectual superiority
or
(2)They literally cannot comprehend it
